I'm in my last week at this law firm. After being told, by the office manager, that I was considered an impediment and hindrance to the litigation department; lacking in communication skills; and that I wasn't now nor in the foreseeable future qualified to be a project manager (after managing staff; work-flow; cases; trials; databases; vendors; deadlines; case teams....) I decided it was time to find other work.

Turns out, the attorneys are quite upset that I'm leaving. Apparently, they don't consider me a hinderence but an asset. Hmmmm.

I'll have a week off between current big law firm and future big law firm.

This week is just filled with weird.

Portrait of an Armchair
It's been quite a year. (It's been quite a decade also)

Last year I

*Lost 1 inch
*Learned that I hate my current employment. (Love what I do, but not where I do it.)
*Watched my parents get old
*Did not take nearly enough days off
*Started restoring my "book room"
*Went on several adventures with Axis (down alleys, over bridges, local things)
*Had my mortgage company seized by the FDIC
*Lost 27 pounds (which I hope never to find again)
*Celebrated by father's 80th birthday
*Helped nurse my mother through two surgeries
*Watched my retirement nest egg shrink
*Learned that my dog likes to sing
*Bought a Kindle (but didn't stop buying books with paper pages either)
*Turned 50 (which I still haven't properly celebrated)
*Got new carpet
*Started outlining a book idea
*Got in touch with old friends from college
*Started outlining a second book idea
*Closed my Facebook account because it was too obnoxious
*Learned three words in Farsi
*Had three unfruitful job interviews
*Had one successful job interview--that will continue into next year
*Took up core training/pilates/yoga twice a week
*Got shot in the back twice (with cortisone for arthritis of the SI joint)
*Went hiking in the local hills and canyons
*Had the worst employment review since I began working when I was 14
*Read at least 50 books
*Contributed to both homeless and animal shelters
*Almost adopted a second dog
*Tried new recipes
*Invented two new salads
*Cleaned almost all personal items out of my office without anyone taking notice
*Tried to stay focused on the blessing I have

I turned 50 today.

I did not get any taller.

My bones do not ache any more (or less) than they did yesterday.

Small dog still thinks I'm the alpha.

Friends and family called in good and happy wishes.

Colleagues (between work related emails) emailed happy wishes.

Axis took me to dinner last night and made Persian rice with beans and beef for dinner tonight (and then did the dishes.)

A quiet day. A good day.

50.

hmmmmm

I was in Toronto. There was much snow. I was staying with people I did not know. I was given a jar of jam that was frozen. When I unscrewed the cap, there was what looked to be mould inside growing on the jam. It was then I noticed the 4 almost like lampwork glass frogs in the lid. My hostess said: "Let them defrost, if they hop away, the jam is good to eat; if they defrost and die, don't eat it." Slowly the frogs defrosted and hopped away.

Portrait of an Armchair
As we brave triple digit temperatures the first week of November,
A lone liquid amber bursts
into flames of fall color,
scattering leaves in brilliant hues.
Mercifully the clouds take pity and gather;
shrouding the mountain
The mercury drops.
